COPPERAS COVE – More community sustainability awards are heading home to Copperas Cove schools.

Thursday, four campuses in Copperas Cove ISD were announced as having won 2024-25 Youth Environmental Ambassador! Awards from the Cen-Tex Sustainable Communities Partnership.

Fairview/Jewell Elementary, Martin Walker Elementary and Hettie Halstead Elementary were all recognized at the awards ceremony in Belton for sustained excellence.

Hettie Halstead Elementary was also recognized for having won the Greater Fort Cavazos Recycle Bowl and the Lights Out Lunch, which awards a school for conserving electricity during student lunches.

Crossroads High School was recognized, not only as a Rising Star in sustainability, but also for its efforts in school beautification.

Finally, Martin Walker Elementary was recognized for winning the Pull Together to Make a Difference competition, in which it collected the most pull tabs off of aluminum cans to recycle.

Harper Huff and Lilianna Fletcher, both students at Hettie Halstead Elementary, were also recognized for winning the poster contest.

The Cen-Tex Sustainable Communities Partnership, in collaboration with Fort Cavazos Child & Youth Services (CYS) School Liaison Office Adopt-A-School Program, offered the Youth Environmental Ambassadors! (YEA!) program to empower youth to make a meaningful difference within their school’s footprint and community and lead in sustainability efforts in the Central Texas region. Schools were challenged to participate in one or more of the initiatives.

Schools from Killeen, Copperas Cove, Belton, Temple, Salado, Lampasas, Jarrell, Florence, Oglesby and Gatesville ISD’s are eligible to participate in the local YEA! Program.

The award ceremony Thursday was held as part of Sustainable Environment Month, and included a proclamation signing as part of the festivities.
