COPPERAS COVE – CCISD continues to improve efficiency and transparency in student transportation.

Tuesday evening, the Copperas Cove ISD Board of Trustees approved the renewal of SMART Tag, a program used to communicate with parents about their student’s bus route.

While this tool isn’t new to Copperas Cove ISD, the Parent Portal for monitoring bus location, arrival and drop off times has been improved.

“SMART Tag helps us ensure the right students get on the right bus and it helps drivers communicate with families, if there is a delay on the route,” said Dr. Joe Burns, superintendent of schools. “This program is something we have seen improve our transportation efforts and we are grateful that our board has seen the value in it, as well.”

SMART Tag offers a parent portal that can be set up on their smart phone and helps them monitor their student’s progress on the way to school and home.

Additionally, the trustees approved the renewal of several partnerships which provide a wide variety of benefits to the district and its students, including Communities in Schools, the Armed Services YMCA and Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Texas.

The board also voted to adopt the election order for November’s election, in which Places 1 & 2 are up for election.

Trustees also approved a contract with the City of Copperas Cove to, once again, provide two School Resource Officers at Copperas Cove High School. These officers will work alongside the recently-instituted School Marshal program on the district’s largest campus.

The meeting started with recognitions of several CCISD staff. Williams/Ledger Elementary librarian Savannah Taylor was recognized for earning Teacher of the Year honors from Lemonade Day of the Greater Fort Cavazos Area.

CCISD special education staff members Tricia Sheaffer and Diania Wendt were recognized for winning the convocation shirt contest, with their “Together, We Succeed” design. This design was featured on the district’s staff shirt for this year, as well as throughout the district’s convocation event last week.

The board also recognized the CCISD Child Nutrition department for winning several awards over the summer: Brandy Coppin for the Partnership in Nutrition Award, Wendy Funug, Leslie Fraser and Brittany Fraser for the Nutrition Education Award and the group of Rachel Vasquez, Leslie Fraser, Melissa Moreno, Janice Nielson and Elizabeth Wood for the Serving Line Decorating Contest at this summer's Texas Association of School Nutrition conference.

The board is next scheduled to meet at the end of the month, when it will hold a Public Hearing for the proposed budget and tax rate. That hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. Aug. 29th and will be immediately followed by a special meeting.
