COPPERAS COVE – With a jam-packed agenda, the CCISD Board of Trustees approved two hires for an assistant superintendent and principal.
Tuesday, the Copperas Cove ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved the promotion of Dr. Jimmy Shuck to the position of Assistant Superintendent for Operations & Support.
Dr. Shuck has been the principal at Copperas Cove High School since the 2019-20 school year and has been instrumental in building CCHS in College, Career & Military Preparedness (CCMP), with 95% of 2023 CCHS seniors graduating College- & Career-ready.
“It's a tremendous honor to be recommended for the role of Assistant Superintendent for Operations and Support,” Dr. Shuck said. “I consider myself incredibly fortunate and blessed to have collaborated with outstanding individuals throughout my leadership journey within CCISD. The operations and support team at CCISD exemplify excellence, offering invaluable support for the successful education of every student within our district. I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to continue working alongside these dedicated professionals.”
Dr. Shuck has been a principal at every level in the district. His first principalship was Crossroads High School, where he also supervised the DAEP program, from 2008-2012. He then took the reigns at Clements/Parsons Elementary School from 2012-2018 and S.C. Lee Jr. High School for the 2018-19 school year. Dr. Shuck is a CCISD alum and has been employed in the district since 1993.
Dr. Shuck earned his Bachelor of Science from Texas Tech University in 1992, his Master of Education in Educational Administration from Tarleton State University in 2005 and his Doctor of Education in Educational Administration from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in 2013.
He holds an active superintendent certification with the State Board of Educator Certification.
“Dr. Shuck has been an invaluable member of our district and our community for more than 30 years,” said Dr. Joe Burns, Superintendent of Schools. “He has thrived in the principalship at all levels and we are excited to welcome him in to a new chapter. We are grateful for the work he’s done in building the college- & career-preparedness path at the high school, and are confident that he will continue to lead CCISD forward to new heights through his efforts in leading our non-instructional initiatives.”
The board also unanimously approved the promotion of Marshall Chauvin to the role of principal at S.C. Lee Jr. High, where he joined the campus as an assistant principal last year.
Chauvin has held several roles in the district since first joining as a substitute teacher in 2016. He also served as a paraprofessional and a math and science teacher from 2017-20. In the 2020-21 school year, he held the role of Digital Learning Coordinator, coaching teachers and staff through issues in digital learning.
He was also an instructional coach in the district prior to becoming an assistant principal in April 2023.
“I am excited for this great opportunity to serve the students and families of S.C. Lee as principal,” Chauvin said. “I am grateful to Dr. Burns and the board for allowing me this opportunity to serve this campus in a new role. I look forward to working with all stakeholders to continue providing high-quality educational opportunities for the students at S.C. Lee.”
Chauvin earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana Tech University in 2015 and his Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Lamar University in 2022.
“Mr. Chauvin has quickly made a remarkable, positive impact on the students here in Copperas Cove,” Dr. Burns said. “We are excited to see him thrive in this new role and continuing to shape student experience in a positive way. Mr. Chauvin will be a continued asset to the Cougar family at S.C. Lee and to the students in north Copperas Cove.”
Both Shuck and Chauvin will begin their new roles in July.
The board also approved the adoption of new science curriculum for all students from Kindergarten through graduation, using McGraw-Hill at the high school grade levels, Savvas at the middle school grade levels and Great Minds at the elementary school grade levels.
“These new science curriculums include the ability to reach students in a digital age,” said Amanda Crawley, Deputy Superintendent for Instructional Services. “We are confident that with the digital lessons, lab tools and other features in these modern curriculum choices, our community will see our students are continuing to learn in the state-of-the-art and modern way they expect.”
The approved quotes for science curriculum are for four years and will be paid for through the district’s Instructional Materials Allotment funding from the state.
The board also approved the purchase of 26 new desktop computers for the CTE Graphic Design lab at Copperas Cove HS, the addition of three new courses at CCHS and the renewal of testing software to continue the district’s efforts to reward high-performing teachers through the Teacher Incentive Allotment. The board also canvassed the votes from the district’s May 2024 bond election.
The meeting started when several student organizations were recognized by the board for outstanding achievements. There were also 18 retiring staff members whose careers were celebrated with the trustees.
The board is next scheduled to meet in June. Its regular workshop is scheduled for Noon on June 10th with its regular meeting scheduled for the following evening at 6:30 p.m.
Both meetings will take place in the Board Room at the District Service & Training Center.
